Christopher is able to decode the message after realising that it is written in Atbash. In The Assassin's Curse, Lord Ashcombe discovers a secret message in the Minotaur's cloak. The code is written in numbers, so a string of numbers would spell out a message. This cipher works by attributing a letter to a number, for example M08, so the letter M would correspond to the number 8. In The Blackthorn Key, Master Benedict uses this cipher to code his recipe for gunpowder and also the secret message for Christopher. Since there are 26 letters in the English alphabet, there are 25 possible ways to cipher a code. For example, 'cat' would be shifted, say two places, to 'ecv'. The cipher works by shifting each letter of each word in the code by a set number of places. This cipher is supposedly unbreakable, since it needs a very specific codeword, or key, to decipher it.Īlthough no one in the books has actually used this cipher, Christopher tests this cipher every time he comes across a new code, as it is very common. In The Assassin's Curse, Christopher and the Templars use a complicated code called the Vigenere Cipher.
